45/64 (1879-11-02), p. 15: judge's report of best motto prize

N:

39 sets sets were received, of which 27 were found to be sound, and almost all of them meritorious. The judge identified seven sets as deserving honorable mention as being fully up to first-class tourney standards, but he also included the prize-winning sets in the list.

The judge explained his judging criteria for the motto prize as follows: In my view a Motto should be original in its application, pointed, pithy, compact, easily understood and so striking as to fix itself upon the memory. He identifies nine such mottos, which thus possibly could be regarded as honorary mentions, but which have not been included here.

Huddersfield College Magazine (v. 8, p. 91) reported additional prizes but probably misinterpreted the judge's statement that the sets A free lance and Et voluisse sat were considered to be third in merit, not that they were given 3rd prize, and also that the best of the two-movers were those from the sets Bust 'em and Et voluisse sat, but not that both of these sets were given prizes.
