Competitors could participate with one single problem per section. Competing for the set prizes required the same motto for all problems in the set, but set prizes were independent of awards in the main sections. Competing problems would become the property of the arrangers after closing date.

The judges reserved the right to modify the prize plan, and in particular the right to add and increase prizes.

N:

No mention of restriction in participation (such that only members of Deutscher Schachbund could participate) has been found.

76 sets comprising 180 problems were received.

68 problems were found to be faulty in some respect, and were returned to their authors for voluntary withdrawal or correction/replacement. (Correction or replacement required payment of a fee, as specified in the announcement.)

A type of fault not mentioned by the announcement concerned illegal positions. The judges considered problems showing illegal positions to be faulty and requested the respective author(s) to correct.

In all, 122 problems were judged to be correct, and eligible to compete for the tourney awards. (All of these problems were published in the tourney book.)

One of the published problems (tourney book, sect. B, p. 48, prb. 32 by R. Suchier) turns out to be the same as a problem in the disqualified set Suum cuique from the British Chess Association, 1873 tourney, and published after the tourney in Deutsche Schachzeitung 28/9 (Sep., 1873), p. 275, prb. 3583.

This may reveal the identity behind the Suum cuique set from 1873. At the same time, it is difficult to understand why an already published problem was sent as an original (perhaps a mistake by the author?), and perhaps also how it passed the examination of the judges.
