Closing date was for last posting date, allowing non-UK competitors
the same time as UK competitors (one US composer entered the competition).
Thirteen problems were received; seven of which found to be unsound,
plus the 2nd pr. winner, for eight unsound problems. Nine of
the problems were published between 1880-02-28 and 1880-04-17.
While the judge's decision was initially said
to be final, a revised award was requested when the 2 pr. problem
(Salutation by J. W. Abbott) proved to be faulty.
