The chess column started on 1875-10-28, and the editor, J. N. Babson,
announced the tourney for problems published in the column during the
following six months. There is no mention of motto requirements, or number of
permitted compositions, or even a specific closing date. A solving tourney
for problems published in the same period of time was also announced.
(The source used has been Miron Hazeltine's Scrapbook, v. 95, p. 1. Unfortunately it provides only partial coverage: no mentions of the tourney have been found around or after May 1, 1876, when the tourney report with awards would be expected.)
